Creating your own Custom Login/Character Selection Screen

This tutorial explains how you could create your own City of Heroes login screen and character selection screens. These will override the default images used in-game.

Software Needed:

  • You’ll need to download:

    • Texture Converter : This script will convert any PNG, TGA, DDS (and several other image formats) into a .texture (the actual format used by the game). This is the easiest option to employ, as long as you follow the usage instructions on the inside. Download here.
      • You’ll also need to download Perl to be able to run the script.
  • Your favorite image manipulation software. If you are planning on using DDS files, I’d recommend either GIMP or Photoshop. Remember to download their respective DDS plugins! DDS Plugin for GIMP | DDS Plugin for Photoshop (if the default one doesn’t work).

Steps

  1. Download and install the software needed.

  1. Extract Texture Converter or Gettex to a suitable directory, for example: C:\texture_converter

  1. Open up your image manipulation software and create your image. The image MUST be 1024 pixels by 1024 pixels, but remember that only 1024 by 768 is displayed, so plan accordingly.

  1. Save your new image on the right location:
  • For the Login Screen:

    • In Texture Converter, save it in ..\texture_converter\texture_sources\GUI\CREATION\HybridUI\LoginScreen\ using the name COH_LogInScreen_Background.(file type here) You will also need to create in the same directory a file called textinfo.txt with the following contents inside:

COH_LogInScreen_Background.(file type here) -rbg -nomips 1024x768

  • For the Character Select Screen:

    • In Texture Converter, save it in ..\texture_converter\texture_sources\GUI\Creation\HybridUI\CharacterCreationUI using the name background.(file type here) You will also need to create in the same directory a file called textinfo.txt with the following contents inside:

background.(file type here) -rbg -nomips 1024x768

  1. Run the texture_converter.pl script.

  1. Retrieve your converted texture from:
  • For the Login Screen on Texture Converter, look on ..\texture_converter\texture_library\GUI\CREATION\HybridUI\LoginScreen

  • For the Character Select Screen on Texture Converter, look on texture_converter\texture_library\GUI\Creation\HybridUI\CharacterCreationUI

  1. Go to your City of Heroes Installation folder (were your game executable is located and create the following folders (if not already there):
  • For the Login Screen: \data\texture_library\GUI\CREATION\HybridUI\LoginScreen\
  • For the Character Select Screen: \data\texture_library\GUI\Creation\HybridUI\CharacterCreationUI

  1. Copy the previously created textures in their corresponding folders created above.

  1. Launch your game client and check if your screen changed!

  1. If it did work, enjoy! If not, go through all the steps above and verify if you really did them correctly.
