How to Join City of Heroes: Rebirth (a guide)

Welcome to City of Heroes Rebirth!

This guide is being written to walk you through the registration and downloading process to the City of Heroes: Rebirth server. These steps may seem similar to the steps taken to join other City of Heroes servers, but it is important to follow these steps exactly in order to avoid common pitfalls.

First Steps: Make a game account

Goes without saying, you need a game account to play on COH: Rebirth. (Note: No, your account from any other private server is NOT transferable here. This applies whether that server is running Volume 2, or Volume 1. We do not, currently, have the means or a process to handle cross-server transfers on an individual basis.)

  1. Visit https://cityofheroesrebirth.com/ and click on “Create Account” at the top of the navigation bar:
  2. On the next screen, agree to the rules of the server and click “I understand.”
  3. On the following two screens, choose a username, password, and provide a VALID email address.

After the third step, you’re game account is all set. You’re ready to begin diving back into Paragon City/Rogue Islands/Praetoria.

Let’s get you the game files now.

Next Steps: Pick and choose a launcher.

Unlike when the game was live, where you used the default COH launcher, there are now at least two launchers (both open sourced and community made) that will let you launch the City of Heroes game. These launchers are CreamSoda and Tequila.

You can pick either one of these as the process is the same for both. Download the launcher of your choice and place it into the directory of your City of Heroes installation. Which brings up one of three possible situations:

  • You DO have the installation files from the original live game
  • You don’t have ANY of the files from the original live game
  • You already play on other private servers (Reborn, Victory, /coxg/, Homecoming).

“You DO have the installation files from the original live game”

In this case, you’re already ahead of the game as you’ve already done the heavy lifting in having the files from the game and don’t need to download most of them all over again from scratch. (The same applies if you don’t have them on your hard drive but you do have the last available installation media from when Paragon Studios/NCSoft last published the game.)

If you don’t already have the game files installed but have the installation discs (preferably the latest), install them now. Run the installation media as you normally would: insert the media into your optical drive, launch the installer if it’s not launched, choose a directory on your drive (keep this in mind), let the program proceed to install the files to the directory you chose and finish. However, when prompted to make a game account on NCSoft, say no. (The links from the installation media don’t work anyway.) If the game launches from the installer, close it.

With the launcher that you downloaded, it should just be a plain .exe file, you can do one of two things:

  1. You can place the launcher directly into the directory that contains your game files, or
  2. You can run the file from elsewhere.

In either case, you should make a shortcut to that launcher and launch the launcher from there. (It is recommended that you do NOT launch the launcher from a “restricted” directory like C:/Program Files (x86)/. Windows and many AV programs may trigger or block the launcher as a virus. Rest assured however, that is not the case.

When you first launch the game launcher, the program will ask you to choose the directory where your files will live:

Navigate to the directory that you chose while installing the game (or where they already are) and then click OK.

The program will now go through and download the updated versions of the core game files for the server selected. (“But Rebirth isn’t up there…”, you might say. In that case, follow the steps in the section labeled, “You already play on other private servers”.)

“You don’t have ANY of the files from the original live game”

Do not fear. You will still be able to play the game, however, this will involve downloading ALL of the game files over the internet. Create a folder for the game somewhere on your drive. (Again, avoid placing it in “restricted” directories like Program Files of your main Windows Drive.)

Now run Cream Soda or Tequila from where ever you’d like. (Again, avoid the restricted directories.) Choose your directory like you did before where you want to install the game. Now, the game will download ALL of the main files needed to install COH from the servers of Rebirth (or the server of choosing).

Don’t launch right away. Skip down to “next steps” at the end of this guide.

“You already play on other private servers (Reborn, Victory, /coxg/, Homecoming, etc.).”

At this point, you’ve already done this many times before. What you need to do now, is add the manifest to the launcher.

This is REALLY simple. The launcher will do all the heavy lifting for you.

You want to add the manifest URL below to the launcher of your choice:
https://join.cityofheroesrebirth.com/Manifests/Rebirth.xml

In CreamSoda:

  • Launch CreamSoda
  • Click on Options:
  • In the Options menu, paste the URL to the manifest above into the Manifests field. (BE SURE TO CLICK ADD AFTER YOU DO)
  • Click on the manifest you just added from the drop-down:image
  • Select “City of Heroes: Rebirth” in the upper half of the image. After you do this, the program will start to re-validate files and will download the files it needs to launch from the server you selected.
  • When the program says “Done…”, your game is ready to launch. Double click the server or click the big “Play” button and the game will launch.

In Tequila:

  • Launch Tequila
  • Click on Options:
    image
  • (Much like before) Click on the manifest you just added from the drop-down: image
  • Select “City of Heroes: Rebirth” in the upper half of the program (as shown). After you do this, the program will start to re-validate files and will download the files it needs to launch from the server you selected.
  • When the program says “Done…”, your game is ready to launch. Double click the server or click the big “Play” button and the game will launch.

All done!

At this point, you’re all done. You’ve got a game account, you’ve got the game files and launcher, and now you’re ready to go! Welcome back to the game!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Hey I play on _______ (some other private server), can I transfer my characters and account from there?
No. Unfortunately, there is no simple way for a server to accept transfers from another private server. We’re still looking into ways to accommodate this. However, this isn’t in the immediate future.

  • Hey I did all of this but I get an account not found! What gives?
Make sure that you are using the correct manifest and have chosen the correct server in the listing. (That is make sure you’re trying to play on Rebirth and not say on another server. I still get support tickets from people trying to log in to Rebirth with their “Homecoming” account details.)

  • “I got this weird error message about outdated video drivers on my game.”
This tends to happen on computers running Intel integrated graphics. You can safely ignore this message as the game should still launch and play. But if you encounter problems, feel free to reach out to the Rebirth Support team and write a ticket to them. (You can also use Rebirth PPD Drone if you’re on the Discord.)
