Good morning! It's been noted that no Halloween Costume Contest was offered this year. Given that the Rebirth staff have been very busy with full-on zone+++ development work, that's understandable! Plus a lot of additional people have been very busy this year; those who would otherwise have coordinated a costume contest. So...

I am hosting an "It's a Tragedy!" Character Contest event on Saturday, 11/2/24 (tomorrow), starting 4pm US EDT sharp in Dark Astoria, between the hospital and base portal.
What's a Character Contest? It's more than just costume. You need to have a backstory written too. This contest is to encourage more in-character roleplay on Rebirth.

What's "It's a Tragedy!" about? Well, for this contest, don't focus just on horror or scares. Bring your most tragic character story and costume. I'll be judging on heartstring-pulling, emo, tragic circumstances for your character. Further, I'll judge on what I consider to be originality, along with effectiveness.

Important note: due to the focus of this contest, I likely need to remind some of us to keep it PG-13; there is a definite line for the tragedy without going too far!

Alright, so what are the prizes?
  • First place: 1,000,000,000 inf, a Hamidon Cystoskeleton Exposure enhancement, and an Apoocalypse: Chance for Negative Energy Damage enhancement.
  • Second place: 500,000,000 inf, an Imperial Might: Recharge/Chance for Knockdown/Knockback to Knockdown enhancement, and a Ragnarok: Chance for Knockdown enhancement.
  • Third place: 250,000,000 inf, a Panacea: Chance for +Hit Point/Endurance enhancement, and a Hecatomb: Chance for Negative Energy Damage enhancement.
  • Honorable mention: if there any honorable mention winners, they will receive 10,000,000 inf each.

Eligibility for prizes depends upon attendance: all players should only bring one character each; players are not eligible for additional prizes for multiple accounts/characters. No monster mash is planned, but who knows what some Game Master might do.

Last night during badge-focused iTrials, I found that this build does just fine solo on a door in BAF, and solo clearing two groups from Lambda's courtyard, and solo getting grenades from crates in that phase of Lambda. There were no pet deaths during any of these. The only time I lost any pets was one of the t3 Wolves while soloing the Security Team bot during Lambda, before the rest of the league showed up.

This shows that (as others already know) MMs can do just fine in iTrials.

So how? It's not just the build, though this build does enable the following:

1. During Lambda, I kept my pets on Passive Follow as the default. Since the rest of the league grabbed most aggro, my stealth and defense kept me safe from attacks. The few times I took damage when other healers didn't immediately cover for it, my Field Medic was all I used - I didn't even use Aid Self. When I wanted to attack the courtyard mobs, I put my pets in Defensive and attacked. When I wanted to attack a grenade crate, or Marauder, or mobs around Marauder during his MoG (we were going for Lambda Looter), I directed my pets to Attack My Target. During those times, my pets drew any aggro and again I was safe (due to my stealth and defenses). I did use Aid Other sometimes on a pet here and there, but since my own actions were primarily support and then attack when support wasn't needed, that was perfectly fine. By the way, I discovered that pets fare far better against Marauder's Nova Strike than player characters do - it's possible this was due to the support players we had, but after the first time I knew I could let my pets continue to maul Marauder and not pull them back during that attack.

2. During the prisoner escape phase of BAF, any MM can do this: issue a GoTo command for the pets just outside the door to be guarded, and put them on offensive. Put oneself back away from the doors, close enough to support the pets but far enough that the Lieutenant-level escaping prisoners don't Confuse me. For my powersets, then lay on the Sleet as soon as it's up, target through my Dire Wolf, and make constant us of Call Ravens when it's up, attacking with other powers when Call Ravens is recharging.

Again, I had only one pet defeat during that night getting Keep 'Em Separated in a BAF and Lambda Looter during a Lambda. Know your powersets, know when to use the various pet stances, and you can do this too.

Brute / Energy/Bio Brute (Blurp)

This build is another truly fun character to play. Some points:

  • I keep Beast Run going all the time, which allows me all kinds of combat maneuverability, especially in coordination with Blink/Blitz.
  • While neither Res nor Def hit any caps (outside combat), the absorb, heal and regen mean my green bar hardly ever budges, even solo at +4/x8 with bosses in.
  • Inside melee, Evolving Armor does bump my Res (though not to Brute cap), and Blink/Blitz hitting does put me at Def softcap for Fire/Cold. Yes, Blink/Blitz are my openers and part of my regular power rotation, keeping that Def bonus up as much as possible.
  • Hasten is only a few seconds away from perma, so I can refresh my Ablative Carapace in less time than its duration.
  • Parasitic Aura and DNA Siphon are part of my regular rotation; they're not spot heals and in this build they recharge pretty darn quickly.

Mastermind / Re: Beasts/Ice MM

I just did some testing with Alpine, and she can take on Council at +4/x8 with bosses in. There were a few pet deaths, but more than half the time there were none in one radio mission like this, and only once was there two pet deaths during a single battle, mostly because Council ran and pets chased - while my Sleet does -50% run, the Council wolves resist that all to hell. If I felt there was an issue with pet deaths, I might micromanage their attacks more (like I used to with Beasts/Dark).

Chewing through (pun intended!) each boss spawn was slower than a regular Tanker would take, and I did have to direct my pets to "attack my target" near the end as the Council just gave up attacking and missing.

The Ice buffs and debuffs are just that strong.

Having Medicine pool powers is really crucial for this build; without some spot healing, there would have been more pet deaths.

Hasten also proved useful for more frequent Sleet and Call Ravens applications.

My current enhancement slotting for Sleet gives a 57.53% Def debuff to targets. This is very overslotted for Def debuff, and I don't really need the set bonuses from what I have slotted in Sleet, so I'm going to either swap out the Analyze Weaknesses for Superior Winter Storms, or go full frankenslotting. That should help anchor Sleet's slow much better, and not sacrifice much from its Def debuff.

Redlynne, mercury rising began posting his builds here partly because I asked that we do so more in our forums rather then just on Discord. I asked this because our forums are easier to navigate for history. Asking people to post builds here is already asking them to step out of their normal current process of discussing them on Discord. In my opinion, to then berate people because they don't provide dissertations on their numbers and reasoning is not very friendly. I'd rather not turn people off sharing their builds on these forums, so for that reason at the very least, may we just let people share w/o judgement? Asking questions sounds like a great thing, but berating does not. Also, and perhaps this is just my style, but it is part of my fun to pick apart builds and see what makes them work - I don't need the dissertations to do that.

Mastermind / Beasts/Ice MM

Here is my build for Alpine, my Beasts/Ice MM. I made this build as an attempt to revive an old character concept, especially for the costume, since Alpine's costume won a Winter-themed costume contest early in Rebirth's history, and I didn't want to lose that tiny bit of Rebirth's story.

I didn't expect this build to be so good, and there is no standard, easily-explainable reason why it is. Alpine doesn't have crazy recharge, soft-capped defense, capped resistance, or other stuff. This is a build that seems to work because is synergizes with Beasts strengths to the point where they are the crazy stars of this show.

Ice brings a quite a lot of cool stuff (pun very much intended) to the fray: stealth, tons of defense, and tons of debuff, and the beasts love that. The debuffs make it easy for them to survive, hit and kill, the defense keeps them alive, and the stealth allows all of us to get in close and decide where the fight will be.

With this build, unlike other Beasts I've played, I tend to keep the pets on Defensive/Follow most of the time. I do keep Ice Shield and Glacial Shield up all the time. I'll keep Frostwork up on my Dire Wolf, or when teaming, the point person. Sometimes I'll use Frostwork like a spot heal while in battle - yes, it is +HP rather than a regular heal, however this does work well. I'll start fights with Snow Storm, Infrigidate or Benumb, which notifies enemies, who attack me, which notifies my pets, who attack them. All neat and tidy. Then I'll cast Sleet and let chaos ensue, focusing on this or that enemy, casting my Medicine pool powers if needed, and just simply go from there. Playing this build has never been a nail-biting time, which is a great thing.

Generator, unfortunately I can't import that data chunk to my Mids, which is version v3.7.4 (Rebirth Issue: 29, Volume: 1 - DBVersion 2023.7.445)

Redlynne, I gave up on the Mids Reborn installers a while ago, and instead download their zip and use the exe from an extracted folder of their zip - that has been working. I also never use the Mids Reborn updater utility.

The empty slot in Lightning Storm above has an Imperial Might: Recharge/Chance for Knockdown/Knockback to Knockdown slotted in it.

This build has proven durable and fun, though even with three end-management powers, sometimes I'm barely avoiding running out. I have all the AoE dmg, Control, and Debuff of Storm, and sufficient ST dmg from Dark. I also have just enough heal in Moonbeam's slotting and Life Drain to keep my vertical, thanks to everything Storm brings. Freezing Rain > Blackstar is amazing damage too. I have Tactics' +ToHit IOs boosted to +5, so along with the Kismet +ToHit IO, means I barely have instasnipe for Moonbeam, which is very nice.

I never used Hurricane in the original version of this build, so I removed it to add Victory Rush - that third end-management power.

This is a build which does fantastic in a team. If there's a large spawn, I'll pop in via Burst of Speed and use my PBAoEs: Atomic Blast, Irradiate, and Dragon's Tail, along with more Burst of Speed. If there's a single hard target, I'll get into melee and use Proton Volley (when Instasnipe is up*), Cosmic Burst and Eagle's Claw. When I need to stay at range, I'll hit single targets with Proton Volley, Cosmic Burst and X-Ray Beam.

*Due to how Reach for the Limit works, Instasnipe is often up, but not all the time. If there's enough team +ToHit around me, Instasnipe is up too.

Since I have Inner Will and Defiance, I don't really need Clarion. Since I have Reaction Time, as long a I stay in melee, I don't run out of End very often. So I picked up Barrier as my Destiny for more survivability - this works well.

I don't use Energy Gauntlet - it's only there to enable getting Force Barrier (a power which really helps with survivability).

Sadly, I don't use Ki Push very often, but it is there if I want the fun or need to use it.

The only enhancement I've actually boosted are the LotGs (to get slightly closer to Def softcap), Hasten's Recharge Reductions, and Force Barrier's Numina's Convalescences.
